THINK LIKE A KID…AGAIN!
Tips on Child-Proofing Your Home
·Make sure all electrical outlets and plugs have up-to-date, approved safety covers.
·Check for any peeling paint that may be ingested.
·Add protective padding to sharp edges of furniture or cabinets.
·Secure curtains and cord pulls out of reach (or cut them) – They are strangulation hazards.
·Install window guards – particularly in bedrooms.
·Buy a first aid kit and post the phone numbers for the police & fire departments and poison control with the kit, near your phones and/or on your refrigerator.
STAIRWAYS
·Install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs and block off banisters and side rails with mess or other protective material.
KITCHEN
·Install childproof safety latches and locks on drawers and cabinets.
·Make sure all cleaning supplies and sharp objects (knives) are out of reach or locked away.
·Keep dishwasher and stove closed and latched.
·Use back burners first and turn all pot handles towards rear of stove.
·When cooking, never leave a child alone in a kitchen.
·Place refrigerator magnets out of reach.
BATHROOM
·Keep all medications locked up and in child-proof containers.
·Make sure no electrical devices/appliances are near the sink, tub or toilet.
·Install safety latches on cabinets and toilets.
·Install a scald guard in the tub.
·Keep soaps and shampoos out of reach.
BEDROOMS
·Positions baby's bed away from windows and heating units.
·Install window guards.
·Hide garment bagsand dispose of dry-cleaning or other plastic bags
BASEMENT/EXERCISE ROOMS
·Treadmills, exercise bikes, weight benches/machines have moving parts that can cause serious injury – restrict access.
GARAGE
·Keep 'off-limits' if possible
·Adjust automatic garage doors to reverse when making contact with an object so children can't be trapped.
·Secure or lock away all chemicals, fuels, power tools.
YARDS
·NEVER leave a child alone near a pool or hot tub!!!
·Do NOT let a child near a barbeque grill.
·Apply netting to any railings and gates at steps.
